It’s been a very busy few weeks at the Snuggle Feet offices!

Les jetted off to China to attend one of the largest trade shows in the world, with a stop in Hong Kong first. It was an important trip for us as we wanted to meet our new suppliers and visit factories that may be supplying us in the future. Les made allot of new contacts and met some fantastic suppliers.

I must admit I was a little jealous that I wasn’t able to go with him, but someone needed to stay at home and look after the three boys as well as the business!

So, we have a few new products coming soon to Snuggle Feet. The first is a gift set, this will contain one of our best selling Snuggle Feet baby shoes paired with a matching embroidered baby gro. We know from experience that allot of our customers not only buy Snuggle Feet for their own children, but also as gifts for other new parents, we think the gift set will be a popular addition!

One of the other new products we will be adding to the site is a Snuggle Collection baby imprint tin, this is a really fun and safe way to create a lasting keepsake, I had one for the boy’s and I love looking back and not quite believing how small their feet once were!!

Finally, we are very excited to have Isa Noisette working on our behalf to raise the profile of Snuggle Feet, thanks Isa!

Busy Times at Snuggle Feet Baby Shoes!

April 19th, 2011

We have been very busy at the Snuggle Feet offices over the last few months. Our customer feedback prompted us to introduce two new products to the Snuggle Feet web site…Snuggle Legs and Snuggle Socks.

Snuggle Legs are fabulous baby and toddler leg warmers; we designed these in response to our customer demands. They can be used in many different ways and are a perfect partner to our soft leather baby shoes. Snuggle Legs can be worn instead of tights, under skirts or shorts so still keeping legs warm and protected whilst making nappy changes much easier.

Also, coming soon are a few new designs! We have ducks, rockets and a new trainer design for girls, plus a few more too.

We already know how many of you buy Snuggle feet as gifts for a new baby or a birthday, so, again in response to you, our customers we will be bringing gift sets to the Snuggle Feet web site, we will tell you more about this soon!

Snuggle Leg Leg Warmers

March 25th, 2011

We have received our delivery of our Snuggle Legs! This is a product I am really excited about as I think they make the perfect partner to our Snuggle Feet baby shoes.

I listened to what our baby shoe customers were saying, they were buying our baby shoes and then going elsewhere to buy their leg warmers…This was not good for business so I decided to find out about manufacturing our own brand of baby leg warmers, with the contacts I already had it was pretty straight forward and a few weeks after the initial idea, here they are!

Our Snuggle Legs are suitable for babies and children, they are soft and have allot of stretch in them. They can be worn in the winter or summer and protect baby’s knees when starting to crawl and cruise.

On girls, they can be worn instead of tights…making nappy changing much easier! Our fabulous designs for boys are ideal for wearing with shorts or an all in one.

Work/Life. Trying To Strike The Right Balance?

January 24th, 2011

Les and I started this business before we had children, in fact I was in the early stages of my first pregnancy. One of the reasons we wanted to work for ourselves was so we had the opportunity to make choices about our time.

When we started out in 2003, our workspace was on the top floor of our house in the spare bedroom. It was a fairly large room that we used for everything…Office, store room and an area for putting together the gift baskets. When Evan was born in the June of 2003, it was fairly easy at first…A new baby tends to just sleep and eat and stays in one place!

As Evan got older we had to make more space for him…We cleared a little corner of the room and set up a travel cot, when I was working I would pop him in there with a supply of toys on rotation! For the first few weeks he didn’t mind but he then started to cry every time I put him in there. It was so hard, we were trying to get the business going and we had a new baby, Les was still working part time and it was very stressful! The image I had of working at home was not what the reality was like!

As time went on, we got into a routine. I would try and do as much as I could when Evan was napping and of course we had the evenings and into the night when he was in bed. We worked all the time we were awake!

When you work from home the lines between home life and work life become blurred…Les always seemed to be looking at the computer screen and I was constantly juggling the deliveries of stock we were getting, trying to find space here and there to put all the boxes!

When I found out I was pregnant again, Evan was not even a year old. I then found out it was twins! I was in shock…How were we going to manage? How would we be able to run the business at home and have three children under two years?

We moved house when I was about four months into the pregnancy…At first we used the bedroom that was going to be for the twins as our multi tasking office come store room. When we had deliveries the hallway would be stacked to the ceiling with boxes, we would then have to lug them up two flights of stairs or if there was no room they would stay there for a week! It was a nightmare, we couldn’t use one of the front room doors as stock was stacked in front of it.

As the pregnancy progressed we knew we would have to do something…We decided to have a small office built in the garden. There was already a concrete base there so we found a builder (cheap) and he set to work. He built us a concrete box which we divided into two rooms, one for an office and one to hold stock and make up the baskets. This was a relief, we moved the computers and desks out of the house and into the garden! I finally had my house back…And just in time as I went into labour early! Rio and Bryn were born in the November of 2004.

So, now we had three beautiful boy’s and a growing business. Life was very busy, Les was always working hard and I did as much as I could, as well as looking after the boys and all the other stuff you have to do!  We found that we were working in the house more a the garden office was freezing and rapidly shrinking under all the boxes of stock, taking calls was a nightmare…If the phone went I would have to run upstairs to answer it so the customer wouldn’t have the children chattering/shouting/crying in the background. I was trying to act professionally when I was still in my dressing gown and mid feeding the boys!!

This was probably the most stressfull period we have had. We decided we would have to look at moving the business out of the house, living and breathing it 24/7 was not healthy and we could not continue to grow in our little house!

So, we found a lovely office with space for everything. It was a big leap as we are very careful with every penny! But once we moved everything out of the house it felt so right. The house was a home again. There was so much room!!

Moving the business out of the house was the best thing we did, though we took our time and were very careful. It has renewed our joy in the business and inspired us to try new ideas. We now have more of a balance in our life, even though Les is still on the computer most of the time when he is at home! It is nice to get up and come to work, we get to see other people here not just each other!

All in all our work is our life, we cant take sick days and get paid. But if there is a school play or a trip I can go. If I want to come to work at 11am I can. I take and pick the children up from school every day. Yes, some weekends I have to put a DVD on and sit the boys in front of it for a couple of hours while we do some work, but the benefits outweigh the negatives. For us anyway.

How And Why We Started Snuggle Feet – Part 2

January 17th, 2011

Rio, wearing an early Snuggle Feet design.

We really got things going in 2007, after we decided on our product, we had to find someone to manufacture it. We had contacts in the baby industry as we had been running www.abcbabygifts.co.uk since 2003, but this was different. We needed to make the baby shoes at a price that meant we could then offer them to our customers at a fantastic price!

Firstly we approached leather factories and manufacturers in the UK, we always love to support local or UK business if at all possible. The stumbling block we had with the UK suppliers and manufactures was the cost…We really wanted our USP to be our price, this just wasn’t going to be possible however much we would have loved it.

So, the next step was approaching manufacturers abroad, again the experience we had gained from setting up the baby gift business really helped out, we were confident to ask the right questions and get all the information we needed. We had to do allot of research regarding the leather that would be used, toxicity reports and all the important information that we would need to feel confident in bringing the baby shoes to market.

It took a while but we found a fantastic factory. The manager, Sharon, was really helpful and held our hands through the whole process. We ordered samples, requested reports, decided on designs (the fun part!) designed a logo, this all took place over a few months. So, we had our shoes…designed in the UK, manufactured in Shanghai!

Finally, midway through 2007 we had a pair of  Snuggle Feet in our hands…It was the start of a new venture!
